A Family Affair

Opened November 2014

Mackenzie Yates, owner of Roost Coffee & Market, 125 SE Spring Street, Suite 102 (509-332-8534), comes from a family of small business owners. When her father, Mike Yates, purchased the BellTower in Pullman and offered to help Mackenzie open her own business, she decided it was time to step out of her comfort zone. Roost Coffee & Market opened in November 2014. Her father also helps run the Foundry Kitchen and Cocktails and owns other businesses in Pullman.

Home Made From Scratch

In addition to wanting a cozy atmosphere where customers could share coffee, Mackenzie wanted a distinctive menu and a place to express her creativity. When asked to describe what makes Roost Coffee & Market different than other coffee places, she said,

“We like to purchase as locally as possible. Food is prepared in our own commercial kitchen, located in the upstairs of the BellTower, by our professional chefs and bakers. My father has been a huge help in the business and continues to provide input. We also offer general catering, special orders, and gift certificates.”

House Specialities

Roost’s house specialties are baked oatmeal, handmade croissants, and house granola. The house coffee beans come from Landgrove Coffee in Troy, ID, also sold at the Moscow Food Coop and the Roost booth at the Moscow Farmer’s Market. Beans from other regional roasters like Evans Brothers, Sandpoint, ID and Dapper & Wise, Portland, OR. are rotated in so customers can sample other proven beans at Roost.

Future Looks Bright

When asked to describe Roost Coffee & Market 5 years from now, Mackenzie said,

“Open and thriving. Owning and operating Roost Coffee & Market has pushed me out of my comfort zone into satisfying and rewarding areas. I’m going to continue to offer new products and services. I have a great crew and solid clientele. With the other changes in Pullman’s downtown landscape, I think the next 5 years will be exciting.”

The unique food offerings unavailable and the varieties of cozy areas to share coffee and talk along with her management style have created a loyal following from the community and university.
